Here's a fun #fixture we made for a #quantity #run we are doing of this #engraved part on the #rotary #4thaxis. Fixture is 4340 steel and locates the C360 brass part on a central 3/32" pin, then locks it down by pushing outwards with two "fingers" that grab the larger 1/4" holes on either side. So great to be doing the very #exacting #laser cutting on these pieces for @swoonhq ! The #paper is 20lb #Sign #Writers #Bond , which is only 0.003" thick! Sooo many tiny, intricate shapes cut out of each one of these. The #detail is incredible. We had to #build a #custom #vacuum #fixture to hold everything down during cutting. #art #artfabrication #CNC #fabrication #Brooklyn

Another shot of the #pole hardware from the last post. Lots of little #innovations throughout this piece. Aside from the improved bearing and lock in the base, another really important one was a change to the top bearing to keep the pole from popping out and falling over. This is a big concern as the athletes participating in this activity get larger and heavier (think big men and very strong women, instead of the 90 lb women most hardware is designed for), doing ever more energetic and acrobatic moves. There have been numerous cases of poles disconnecting and falling during #national competitions! Ours would need to deflect almost 10" from the centerline to let go (not an easy thing to do with the heavy-gauge solid #stainless #steel pole we used). #productdesign #industrialdesign #engineering #fabrication #CNC #Instamachinist #Brooklyn

Video from a piece we designed, engineered, and prototyped last year. This is a locking base for pole dancing. Most people don't seem to realize this, but these poles all have a bearing in the bottom and they spin on that bearing. Standard hardware is a low-cost #ABEC #skateboard bearing, used sideways (those bearings are not designed to take that kind of axial load, and are prone to early failure). We replaced this with a tapered roller bearing designed for loads and rotational speeds hundreds of times what it will ever see. The #dancers also need to be able to lock the pole into a static position. Most poles use truly crappy hardware, and the lock consists of a pin dropped into a hole in the plastic base. Our lock is positive, engaged in multiple pole orientations, will last for years, and despite the excessively fine thread on this prototype, still pretty fast to switch over. #productdesign #industrialdesign #engineering #mechanism #aluminum #CNC #prototype #Instamachinist #Brooklyn

Found another application for the @pierson_workholding #SmartVac #Custom #fixture for cutting a #prototype decorative #walnut wall tile. The uses for this things are endless! #CNC #router #Brooklyn

All right! @hurco_user was right on this one. About 10 minutes in the #NaOH and the #aluminum slugs could be tapped right out with a drift pin. A few more minutes in the #sauce and they look almost as good as new.

OK, @hurco_user let's see how this goes… Hoping I can reclaim this 1/2" 3-flute @lakeshorecarbide end mill from the terrible, terrible things I did to it.

New #cutter day! Got these beasts from @lakeshorecarbide today. The two square end mills are their variable-helix 3-flute rougher-finishers in 1/2" & 3/4" diameters. ZrN coated, polished gullets. These things are TEARING through 6061 for us. Pretty sure they are made of pure #Unicorn horn.

Mill op1 complete. Result: #fabulous

Figured out how to move these big #blocks of #aluminum – built a #vacuum #lifter using a @pierson_workholding vac generator and our trusty Mr4K. 9" x 9" inside the gasket = 81 sq in x 14psi = 1,134 lbs of (theoretical) holding force. This block is about 430 lbs, so that gives me a nice #safety factor of over 2. Now to start making the one to lift the big guy…

OK, @thesupermarket , it's on. #Big #aluminum has landed. This piece is one of 7, though it is the biggest at 1,334 lbs which is still only about 1/3 of the table weight limit on the #Fadal #VMC4020 . #MetroCard for scale.
